It had been yet another long zombie like day for the young woman. Madelyn had been up for half of the night working for FEAR only to have to go to work at noon for a five our shift of dealing with tourist. Sometimes she wondered why she did this to herself, she made enough money working with FEAR so why did she keep her day job? Maybe it was because it was the only thing left of the human world for her. It was the only time she was safe, the only time she could be just like everyone else. It made her feel human.
Walking into the female locker room Madelyn kept her head down and didn’t look any of the other workers in the eyes. By this point she was tired of putting on her cheery smile for everyone. She was tired, grumpy and her arm hurt like a son of a bitch. It was like the thing was trying to rip open again and burst into flames. Grabbing her arm just at the thought she rub it just slightly a small wince coming across her face. Opening her locker she reached into it and pulled her purse out. Now all that was left to do drive home and sleep. Hopefully work didn’t call her or her twin sister for that matter. Closer the door of her locker, she pressed her head against the cool metal before locking the lock. “Maddie is everything okay?” One of her co-workers ask trying to peek under her long black hair.
Looking over with at her co-worker with her deep brown Asian eyes.”I’m fine, hang over.” She lied with a small smile. Her co-worker laughed and turned away. Lie worked at least. Pushing herself up with a sigh she rubbed her forehead before making her way towards the door of the staffroom, her bag coming up onto her good shoulder. With a nice head up walk out of the staffroom and into the empty museum she smiled at the few people she walked by and brought up her bad arm just slightly to wave back to a few before leaving through the back door. Safe. Free.
Taking in a deep breath of fresh air Madelyn slowly started to make her way around the back into the busy streets of New York. Making her way through the coward just as anyone else would, flowing through like just another human, just another person, nothing important. However, as she tapped her foot as she came to the crosswalk, waiting for the light to change did someone gasp. “Oh my god your bleeding!” A woman said. Madelyn eyes flew open and she looked down at her arm. It had soaked through her gray work shirt.
“Shit.” She cursed under her breath taking a hold of her arm. Her eyes flashed around as the voice started to raise. She needed to get out of there. She turned on her heels and pushed through the groups of people and just ran. She didn’t know where she was going but she was getting out of there fast. Looking for the closes alley she turned into it and pressed her back to the wall hoping no one would notice her. A few people had called after her and she was sure someone had pulled out their phone to call 911. Taking in another deep breath, she filled her lungs with the missing air it wanted so badly. She had ran for maybe a block? Her arm was killing her, she looked down at it and pulled her hand away just slightly. It was painted in red.
